Youth and adults lessons are offered through the Bald Head Island Sailing Club by qualified instructors from April-September. Students receive four days of instruction (Tuesday-Friday) for three hours, for a total of 12 hours of lessons. Classes run from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1-4 p.m., and class size is limited to ensure quality instruction.
Beginning “Learn to Sail” classes are offered to youth and adults ages 8 and up (students are grouped by age). A swim test is required. At the instructor’s discretion, 6- and 7-year olds can participate in lessons as a part of a family group. Classes are limited to just four students with one instructor, ensuring that students have ample time on the helm and a relaxed atmosphere for learning. Boats utilized for beginning classes are Optimist Prams and Schock Harbor 20s.
Intermediate “Learn to Sail” classes are offered to youth and adults ages 12 and up, with students grouped by age. A swim test is required. Club 420s are utilized for intermediate instruction, with class size limited to eight students (two per boat) and one instructor, enabling students to learn how to sail a more complex sailboat and work together as a team. Helm duties are divided evenly among students.
Advanced lessons will also be offered for qualified students. Skills taught will include spinnaker handling, racing rules, strategy and tactics.
Lessons (12 total hours) are $250, with a one-time $25 initiation fee.
